ISI Presents Envision to the United Nations in Geneva

Melissa Peneycad Invited to Address UN Economic Commission for Europe

On Monday, March 25, 2019 Melissa Peneycad, ISI’s Acting Managing Director, addressed the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva, Switzerland.  She was one of a small group of world-leading experts who were invited to discuss innovation, public-private partnerships (PPP), and project assessment tools to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

While Envision has been gaining a strong foothold in the United States and Canada, many nations have not yet heard of ISI and its Envision sustainable infrastructure framework, or the organization’s success in verifying sustainable infrastructure projects.

Peneycad’s presentation on ISI, Envision, and its application to evaluate PPPs and other project types against the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) was warmly welcomed by a collective of representatives from UN organizations including the UN Industrial Development Organization and the UN Conference on Trade and Development, delegates representing several UN member states, and many non-governmental organizations.  She underscored the relevant aims of Envision and the verification process and emphasized the aspects of Envision that specifically address the UN SDGs, including equity and social justice, economic effectiveness, stakeholder engagement, reducing carbon emissions, and training and job creation.

Envision’s impact also caught the attention of attendees.  Since 2013, Envision has been used to evaluate the sustainable performance of more than 70 infrastructure projects, collectively worth more than $19.5 billion, with another $31 billion of infrastructure development registered for Envision review. Recognizing the collective effort behind Envision, Peneycad hailed ISI’s founding organizations and partners, and the almost 8,000 Envision Sustainability Professionals trained in the use of Envision as an infrastructure planning and design tool. She also gave specific recognition to the numerous public-sector departments, agencies, and municipalities across the United States and Canada that are formally adopting the Envision framework for their infrastructure developments.

“This was a real honor,” said Peneycad whose presentation resulted in requests from the leadership of UNECE’s Committee on Innovation, Competitiveness, and Public-Private Partnerships for further dialogue on the application of Envision around the world. “ISI is grateful to the Secretariat for the invitation to participate in this meaningful pursuit.  This meeting was just the beginning and I sense an exciting future for sustainable infrastructure and Envision.”

Changing and Renewing Leadership

A Message from ISI’s Acting President & CEO

I am honored that the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) Board of Directors has asked me to assume the role of Acting President and CEO. This is an exciting time for ISI and the Envision community. Having been involved since ISI’s inception I am incredibly proud of all we have accomplished together over the years.

Our collaboration with stakeholders is what has defined ISI. The organization’s creation was itself an act of collaboration between our founding organizations that continue to support and guide us today: the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Public Works Association (APWA), and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). Creating Envision was another collaboration with Harvard University’s Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure. Envision became a first-of-its-kind tool in the United States and Canada that has helped advance sustainable infrastructure for seven years and counting. Most recently, the development of Envision v3 was the fulfillment of a promise that Envision would grow and adapt with our industry’s needs. More than 85 professionals volunteered their time and talents to make this next Envision even better than before. Today, with Melissa Peneycad and Lindsey Geiger leading unprecedented growth in our verification and education programs respectively, we have a talented leadership team in place ready and eager to take advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead.

While we are proud of all we have accomplished together we also recognize the considerable work ahead of us. To borrow a quote, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”. ISI was created to serve the infrastructure community in this way; to bring together those committed to sustainable infrastructure and to provide for them the tools, resources, services, and advocacy they need. In a world of limited time and resources ISI’s goal is to identify areas where shared and collaborative research and development can make the most impact. This is our renewed pledge going forward.

ISI staff and I are unanimous in our commitment that this exciting new phase in Envision’s growth be marked by the same collaboration as our creation. It is no easy feat. Today we number among the Envision community 572 companies, universities, and government agencies. This includes 8,000 Envision Sustainability Professionals—many recently renewing their commitment in our new credential maintenance program. Our verification program has reviewed 71 projects totaling $19.5 billion in infrastructure development with another 106 projects totaling $30.8 billion registered for review. I assure you this is just the beginning. With your support we can ensure this momentum continues to grow.

In the coming weeks and months I ask you to stay connected. We will be reforming committees, asking for your input, and sending out more communications regarding our activities and the activities of the Envision community. We will be developing better ways to share and disseminate information, and we will work hard to get the resources and tools you need into your hands faster and more reliably. ISI’s future is bright as we serve the essential needs of communities around the world, and are fueled by the passion, commitment, and considerable talents of our community of practice.

I sincerely hope that you will be a part of it.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Changing and Renewing Leadership:

ISI Board of Directors Welcomes Anthony Kane as Acting President and CEO

March 4, 2019 – Washington, DC – Today, the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure’s (ISI) Board of Directors is excited to announce the appointment of Anthony Kane as the new Acting President and CEO. The appointment follows the resignation of former President and CEO John Stanton. As he moves on to new opportunities we thank and appreciate John for his leadership during the past two years.

ISI is at an exciting point in its development having transitioned from a start-up to a wholly independent organization enacting real change in infrastructure and related sectors. In recent years ISI has experienced order of magnitude increases in Envision project awards and Envision Sustainability Professional credentials. The development and launch of Envision version 3 and a surge in demand, are all accelerating progress towards ISI’s mission; to enable the development of infrastructure that optimizes environmental, social, and economic vitality.

As we continue to look to the promising future we are grateful that we have cultivated key core staff and can now reshape and place our executive and operational leadership in their hands. They are gifted professionals who are rooted in our vision, exceptionally experienced in the practical applications of Envision, and widely respected by industry, public sector, institutional, and Envision stakeholders. They are compelling spokespeople for ISI’s mission and values.

Anthony Kane has served as ISI’s Managing Director, a role that required comprehensive supervision of ISI operations. As a principal researcher within the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure at Harvard University, he was a key architect in the development and launch of Envision and since coming to ISI, continued as the responsible leader in all facets of Envision development and delivery.

Melissa Peneycad was an early Envision Professional, Trainer, and Verifier, who played a central role in some of the first successful Envision awarded projects. Coming to ISI in 2017, as Director Sustainable Projects she has held full responsibility for Envision verifications and awards, and has been a primary link to both the community of verifiers and owners.

Lindsey Geiger joined ISI in 2018 as Director of Education. She manages our Envision Sustainability Professional training program and launched the new credential maintenance and continuing education programs. As a licensed engineer she brings a wealth of professional experience in promoting sustainability education within the infrastructure industry.

ISI’s growth reflects an escalating worldwide need for infrastructure renewal, and the opportunity to lead in establishing the sustainable infrastructure paradigm. This progress has also underscored our next challenges and opportunities – to assertively consolidate gains, build resource and professional capacity, and promote Envision’s benefits and successes to the North American and international markets. Therefore, over the past 9 months, the newly constituted Board of Directors worked with our CEO and staff to develop a comprehensive organizational strategy and business plan. With the success of those plans foremost in our minds, our staff will work along with our partners to implement our Plan to fulfill our mission, build our resources, and to enhance our topnotch professional staff, tools, training and technologies. Drawing on more than 8000 Envision Professionals, and our growing international network of owners, planners, engineers, communities, institutions, contractors and other infrastructure stakeholders we are poised to drive forward ever more rapidly.

John Williams
Chairman of the Board
