Our Education & Credentialing Program equips professionals with the knowledge, skills, and resources to advance sustainability, resilience, and equity in civil infrastructure. It is built around the Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) credential — an increasingly recognized designation for professionals across public, private, and academic sectors — but it goes beyond a single credential. It is a growing ecosystem of learning opportunities, expert leadership, and professional engagement designed to advance sustainable infrastructure practice at every career stage. Many of our offerings also fulfill continuing education requirements for other leading organizations. From credentialing and training to free education, academic collaboration, and professional convenings, ISI’s Education & Credentialing Program supports continuous learning and leadership in sustainable infrastructure.

What is the ENV SP Credential?

The Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) credential is a globally recognized designation that signifies deep understanding of the Envision Sustainable Infrastructure Framework — a holistic approach to planning, designing, delivering, and operating sustainable infrastructure. Since its launch, thousands of professionals have earned the ENV SP credential, enabling them to apply Envision principles to real-world infrastructure challenges and opportunities. The ENV SP credential is a professional designation for individuals to demonstrate knowledge of the Envision Sustainable Infrastructure Framework.

Featured Opportunities

ENV SP Training

ENV SP training — offered as self-paced online modules or via live virtual or in-person workshops hosted by ISI-approved Envision Trainers — support professionals pursuing the ENV SP credential by introducing the Envision Sustainable Infrastructure Framework, exploring how it can improve the sustainability of their projects, and demonstrating how to use it for evaluating project sustainability outcomes. These trainings will also prepare participants for the ENV SP exam.

Applicants Course

Designed for more experience ENV SPs, the Applicants Course is a live virtual training that offers a closer look at Envision project verification, providing participants with an in-depth understanding of the tools, resources, and systems available to support a successful Envision verification process. It is led by ISI verification specialists and intended for individuals who already have their ENV SP credential and are preparing to support an application for project verification.

Sustainable Infrastructure Webinars

Throughout the year, ISI hosts free webinars led by industry leaders, practitioners, and subject-matter experts. These sessions explore real-world applications of Envision, emerging trends in sustainable infrastructure, and lessons learned from projects across sectors and geographies. Many webinars qualify for professional development and continuing education credits, as noted in each event description.

ISI Annual Conference

The ISI Annual Conference virtually convenes infrastructure professionals, public agencies, academics, and private-sector leaders to share insights, case studies, and best practices in sustainability and resilience. The conference offers thought-leadership programming, practical implementation examples, professional networking opportunities, and continuing education credit opportunities.

Envision Train-the-Trainer Program

Our virtual Envision Train-the-Trainer course prepares experienced ENV SPs to deliver official ENV SP training workshops on ISI’s behalf. Envision Trainers also participate in periodic Trainer Roundtables to share updates and exchange ideas with other trainers. This program helps expand global access to Envision education while ensuring consistent quality, rigor, and alignment with ISI standards. Envision Academic Grants

Our Envision Academic Grants aim to advance sustainability in higher education through the integration of the Envision framework into academic research and course content. This annual grant initiative is designed to support faculty as they apply Envision to guide, evaluate, and strengthen academic work related to sustainable infrastructure and systems thinking. Selected applicants will receive funding to revise and/or develop coursework and/or research aligned with Envision, credits for Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) credential training, and opportunities for peer learning and presentation.

Academic Committee

ISI’s Academic Committee plays a critical role in advancing education and research related to sustainable infrastructure, ensuring that Envision principles continue to inform both current practice and the next generation of infrastructure professionals. The committee:

- Supports integration of Envision into academic curricula
- Engages faculty and students in applied sustainability practice
- Helps shape educational resources and future programming

Credentialing & Learning Strategy Committee

The Credentialing & Learning Strategy Committee provides governance and oversight for ISI’s credentialing programs, including the ENV SP designation. This independent oversight reinforces the credibility and value of ISI credentials worldwide. The committee is responsible for:

- Maintaining credential integrity and rigor
- Reviewing policies related to exams, renewals, and maintenance
- Ensuring alignment with professional standards and evolving industry needs

ENV SP Directory

ENV SPs can opt to be listed in our ENV SP Directory, which can be filtered by location, trainer status, and/or role in verified Envision projects. *To opt in, log in to your ISI account and select “Edit Profile.” From there, navigate to “Public Profile” to add or update your information. To make your profile publicly visible, toggle “Include profile in public directory” to “On.” Be sure to press “Save” before leaving the site.

Professional Development & Continuing Education Credits

ISI’s education and credentialing offerings are designed to support ongoing professional development across a range of disciplines. In addition to fulfilling ENV SP credential maintenance requirements, many ISI trainings and exams also qualify for external professional development and continuing education credits recognized by leading organizations. You can email academic@sustainableinfrastructure.org if you’d like help interpreting credit eligibility, but ISI staff cannot guarantee acceptance by external organizations or state boards. For example, while many ISI offerings align with common state licensing board requirements, each state sets its own requirements, so final determination rests with the individual licensing board.

Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP) — ISI is a RCEP Registered Continuing Education Provider for engineers and land surveyors and is approved to issue Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for education activities, including our ENV SP exam and select webinars.
American Planning Association (APA) — ISI is an APA Certification Maintenance (CM) Provider, approved by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) to offer education and training activities for CM credit, including many of our webinar offerings.
Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) — ISI is recognized as an EIC Quality Learning Provider and is authorized to award EIC continuing education units to Canadians for the ENV SP exam.
