Featured in Informed Infrastructure: Sustainability is an Engineering Process
16-September-2026
The 2026 Sustainable Engineering Issue of Informed Infrastructure includes the second article in a series by Jennifer Ninete, Director of Research & Engagement at ISI, “Sustainability Is an Engineering Process: Using Frameworks to Make Better Infrastructure Decisions.”
Jen previously introduced the Envision Framework to Informed Infrastructure’s readers. In the most recent article, she explores the mindset behind that framework: “Sustainability isn’t a separate discipline, an optional enhancement or a final checklist completed before construction. It’s part of the process for making better infrastructure decisions.”
Excerpt from the article:
Infrastructure has always required project teams to balance competing priorities. Every project must meet technical requirements, stay within budget, satisfy regulatory obligations and serve the needs of the communities it’s built to support. Increasingly, however, those same projects also are expected to address resilience, resource efficiency, environmental impacts, equity and long-term performance.

Two of the projects mentioned in the article: Denver International Airport, Pena Boulevard Phase 1B, Denver (Envision Silver, 2025); Bull Run Filtration Facility in Multnomah County, Ore. (Envision Platinum, 2025)
