ISI Member September Spotlight: King County
10-September-2026
ISI is excited to spotlight King County this month, a dedicated ISI member since 2014. King County’s departments and agencies are engaged in sustainable infrastructure across the region, from public transportation and wastewater treatment to airports, roads, parks and natural resources, and solid waste.
With its broad range of departments and infrastructure responsibilities, King County represents the kind of cross-sector organization where Envision can support sustainability goals across many different types of projects. The County has more than 50 Envision Sustainability Professionals (ENV SPs), demonstrating its commitment to applying Envision to infrastructure planning and delivery. Its largest cohort of ENV SPs is within King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) (34 ENV SPs). In 2018, the Georgetown Wet Weather Treatment Station became the first Envision Platinum project in Washington state!
The WTD went on to carry out the Sunset / Heathfield Pump Station and Force Main Upgrade (Envision Silver, 2021) and, with Seattle Public Utilities, the Ship Canal Water Quality Project (Envision Platinum, 2022). King County was also a grant fund partner (along with Washington State Department of Ecology) for the NE 16th Street & Jefferson Avenue NE Stormwater Green Streets Project (Envision Verified, 2024).
King County’s application of Envision reflects its appreciation for the framework’s holistic approach. As Heidi Sowell, Sustainability Project Lead with King County WTD, has noted: “Envision is very holistic. We found, for example, that no other rating system captured and gave credit for work that we do with the community and stakeholders, or the benefits of that work.”
King County Metro, currently celebrating six years as an ISI member, achieved Envision Platinum for the RapidRide H Line Project back in 2024. This bus rapid transit project transformed one of King County Metro’s ten busiest routes to address key public transit issues and help foster a more mobile, equitable, and resilient community.
The King County Approach to Broader Envision Engagement and Training
King County has been an ISI member since 2014, and today more than 160 employees across eight departments are connected to its organizational membership account.
With a goal of expanding Envision knowledge and training more staff as Envision Sustainability Professionals (ENV SPs), King County needed an account structure that could support multiple departments while allowing each team to manage its own participation.
Working with Jillian Samowitz, ISI Membership Specialist, King County established departmental Sub-Administrators who can approve association requests, purchase training credits, and monitor training progress for their respective teams. This structure allows King County to coordinate its membership across a large organization while giving individual departments greater flexibility to support their staff.
King County’s approach is a great example of how an ISI organizational membership can be structured to support broader employee engagement, ENV SP training, and the use of Envision across teams.
