ISI Member Spotlight: Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

This month, ISI is pleased to recognize Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (RHIT) for its leadership in advancing sustainable infrastructure education and for its active engagement as an academic ISI Member since 2023. Sustainability is a core component of Rose-Hulman’s Civil and Environmental Engineering programs, where applying sustainability principles to engineering problems is embedded in the program’s student learning outcomes. In addition to civil and environmental engineering degrees, students can pursue a minor in sustainability with an opportunity to work on real-world sustainability projects.
Dr. Jennifer Mueller, P.E., ENV SP, an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at RHIT, is a valued member of ISI’s Academic Committee, helping shape the future of engineering education by bringing sustainability principles into the classroom through the Envision Sustainable Infrastructure Framework. At the 2026 ASEE Annual Conference, she presented the work she and her colleagues, Professors Aidoo, Kershaw, Lovell and Payne, implemented to teach students how to address resiliency and equity in infrastructure design through the Envision framework (Link to session.) Their paper focuses on using Envision as a sustainability teaching tool for civil engineering students. She then joined experts from other universities who shared their insights on the Panel which followed her presentation, Envision in the Civil Engineering Classroom & Curriculum.
During the 2025 ISI Annual Conference Dr. Mueller presented her work on “Senior Capstone Design Applications in Civil Engineering using the Envision Rating System,” and will present “Integrating Envision in Engineering Courses: A Multi-institute Discussion of Curricular Examples,” during the 2026 ISI Annual Conference.
ISI is grateful for Rose-Hulman’s ongoing partnership and the dedication of Dr. Mueller, her colleagues, and her students. Together, they are advancing sustainable infrastructure education through teaching, research, and engagement, strengthening both the academic community and the infrastructure profession.
