Member Spotlight: Port of Long Beach

Port of Long Beach (POLB) is one of the busiest seaports in the United States and a major gateway for trans-Pacific trade. Located adjacent to the Port of Los Angeles, it handles billions of dollars in cargo annually and supports hundreds of thousands of jobs.  

More than 50 employees  at POLB are ENV SPs, and several more have received Envision training. The port also participates in the Envision Maritime Forum, a collaborative forum at ISI whose goal is to connect port practitioners and build collaboration around Envision and sustainability.  POLB representative Scott Gallic is a long-time Envision champion and he was also a mentor for the ASCE Sustainable Solutions Competition this year, which ISI supports.

The Port of Long Beach integrates the Envision framework to guide the sustainability of its horizontal infrastructure projects, using tools like the Envision Pre-Assessment Checklist at key design milestones. Envision is referenced throughout the project lifecycle—from planning and design to construction and closeout—with dedicated roles such as the Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) responsible for documentation and compliance. The manual provides sample specifications, guidelines, and supporting tools to help teams achieve Envision credits and verification, and encourages collaboration through committees and working groups.
