Two e2i Energie Speciali’s Wind Farms, consisting of the full repowering of the previous plants located in Castiglione Messer Marino and Roccaspinalveti in the Abruzzo Region in Italy, have been recently awarded by Envision the Platinum certificate for sustainable infrastructure.
E2i Energie Speciali (E2i) is one of the leading companies in the Italian renewable energy market with a total installed capacity of approximately 724 MW, through 40 wind farms and 3 PV plants.
Castiglione Messer Marino e Roccaspinalveti wind farms’ full repowering (i.e. a comprehensive entire reconstruction) are part of a Repowering plan which E2i, first in Italy, has been carrying out with the aim to increase its green energy production whilst minimizing the impact on the territory by reducing the number of installed turbines and strengthening the relationship with local Communities.
In the Abruzzo Region, e2i installed 188 wind turbines in the early 2000s for a total capacity of 114 MW. A first phase of Repowering projects was concluded in 2019 resulting with an overall power output of 131 MW. A second phase involved the wind plants mentioned above which allowed to reach a new total power output of 145 MW.
In these repowering projects, the activities were focused:
- in the Municipality of Castiglione Messer Marino, where 24 old wind turbine generators (WTGs) were replaced by 4 new VESTAS V114 wind turbines for a total installed capacity of 2MW;
- in the Municipality of Roccaspinalveti, where 23 old WTGs were replaced by 9 new VESTAS V114 wind turbines for a total installed capacity of 7 MW.
Compared to the previous plants now dismantled, such repowering project allowed to obtain the following positive environmental objectives:
- 72% reduction of installed WTGs numerosity
- Approximately 1.5x increase of the power output, with a nearly 2.0x total energy production.
The project layout considered the geological nature of the land, its altimetric profile as well as E2i’s internal goal to re-utilize as much as possible existing roads and existing infrastructures, in order to minimize the environment impact.
The expected annual energy production of these two new plants will be double the energy output of the previous plants at approx. 114 GWh / year, corresponding to the energy needs of approx. 42.000 residential customers in the Italian market and avoiding the emission of 32.000 tons of CO2 equivalent.
The recognition of the Platinum level confirms the high level of sustainability recognized to Repowering projects which manage to take care of both social, environmental and economic issues for local Communities and underlines how E2i pays significant attention to the entire life cycle of its plants, from the development and design phase to the construction, the operation and the dismantling phases.

Le Integrali Ricostruzioni dei parchi eolici di Castiglione Messer Marino e Roccaspinalveti fanno parte di un piano di Repowering che E2i, prima in Italia, sta portando avanti con l’obiettivo di aumentare la propria produzione di energia verde e, allo stesso tempo, minimizzando l’impatto sul territorio attraverso la riduzione del numero delle turbine eoliche e il consolidamento del rapporto con le Comunità locali.
In Abruzzo, provincia di Chieti, all’inizio degli anni 2000 l’azienda aveva installato 188 turbine eoliche per un totale di 114 MW. Dopo una prima fase di Repowering conclusa nel 2019, che ha portato ad una potenza complessiva dell’area di 131 MW, questa seconda fase permette di aumentare la capacità complessiva installata fino a 145 MW.
In questi progetti di repowering, le attività sono state concentrate:
- nel Comune di Castiglione Messer Marino, in cui le 24 turbine dismesse sono state sostituite da 4 turbine eoliche VESTAS V114 raggiungendo una capacità installata totale di 13,2MW;
- nel Comune di Roccaspinalveti, in cui le 23 turbine dismesse sono state sostituite da 9 aerogeneratori VESTAS V114 per una capacità installata complessiva di 29,7 MW.
La seconda fase di repowering in Abruzzo ha consentito di ottenere positivi riscontri dal punto di vista ambientale rispetto agli impianti esistenti, in particolare:
- Riduzione dell’effetto selva, ovvero riduzione del 72% del numero di nuovi aerogeneratori rispetto all’esistente nella medesima area
- Incremento di 1.5 volte la potenza complessiva rispetto agli impianti esistenti dismessi, raddoppiando nel contempo la produzione attesa.
Il layout del progetto ha considerato la natura geologica del terreno, il suo andamento plano-altimetrico nonché il preciso obiettivo di E2i di sfruttare il più possibile la viabilità e le infrastrutture esistenti, al fine di minimizzare gli impatti sull’ambiente.
La produzione annua prevista per questi nuovi impianti sarà di ca. 114 GWh / anno, il doppio rispetto a quello degli impianti dismessi, pari al fabbisogno energetico di 42.000 famiglie nel contesto del mercato energia in Italia. La produzione di energia elettrica consentirà annualmente di evitare inoltre l’emissione in atmosfera di 32.000 tonnellate di CO2.
Il raggiungimento del livello Platinum testimonia la sostenibilità dei progetti di Repowering prendendo in considerazione gli aspetti sociali, ambientali ed economici delle Comunità locali e sottolinea quanto E2i ponga attenzione all’intero ciclo di vita, dallo sviluppo e progettazione alla fase di costruzione, esercizio e dismissione.
