The design phase of the Piazza Sigmund Freud redevelopment project, located in front of Milan’s Porta Garibaldi Station, has been awarded Envision Silver.
The remaking of Piazza Sigmund Freud — led by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (a subsidiary of the FS Italiane Group) in collaboration with FS Sistemi Urbani (FS Group) and the Municipality of Milan — was chosen by RFI as a pilot project for Envision verification.
Scheduled for completion in 2026, this project will improve the quality, comfort, and overall user experience of the station and its surroundings for travellers and residents. Key elements include creating a new urban park featuring expansive green spaces, medium- and large-sized trees, pools, and rest areas with terraces. Porta Garibaldi Station will be reconnected to the adjoining community, becoming the hub of a cohesive and vibrant urban space. The improvements support a vision of enhancing the site’s accessibility, usability, and safety, while enriching citizens’ quality of life.
The new Piazza Sigmund Freud will redefine the access road to prioritize pedestrian features, create a wide walkway in front of the station, and add dedicated zones for taxis and motorbike parking. To the north of the square, near the station entrance, there will be a ‘kiss and ride’ drop-off zone, loading/unloading areas, car and bike sharing stations, and spaces for motorbike, e-car and bike parking.
Lighting was carefully considered as a key element for safety and aesthetics, especially given the station’s significance to this urban area and the influx of riders during the late afternoon and evening hours.
The certifying body rated this project highly for its contributions to the Envision Quality of Life category, particularly for its improvements to accessibility and usability. The design for the park earned recognition in the Natural World category, showcasing the project’s commitment to integrating nature into the urban fabric.
