The design phase of the Ponte nelle Alpi – Polpet Station Project has earned Envision Silver.

Designated as a rail-road interchange hub for the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, the Ponte nelle Alpi-Polpet station project responds to the need for increased passenger flows ahead of the Games. Led by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), it is one of the priority locations under the Integrated Station Plan (PIS), RFI’s broader strategy to modernize and integrate its railway stations redevelopment into a more sustainable and efficient transport network.

The project scope includes:

• Extension of the underpass and construction of a third platform with new stairs and lifts

• Expansion and redevelopment of the passenger building

• Reorganisation of external areas on the Polpet side

• Adaptation of the Station Master Plan, including reinforcement, electric traction and signalling equipment works

The project will reconnect the northern and southern parts of the city — currently divided by the railway line — by extending the railway underpass and introducing new mobility interchange services in the northern area.

A key priority is to ensure that the railway infrastructure promotes social integration rather than division and fragmentation, connecting the station and its functions with the surrounding context, enhancing community mobility and fostering multiple linkages.

The new road system features a green belt and pedestrian paths in the northern area, integrating seamlessly with the surrounding urban context.

The expansion of the passenger building meets sustainability criteria by sourcing local materials and construction technologies, such as dry wooden structures. The project also complies with the energy performance criteria of a Nearly Zero Energy Building, achieving a high level of efficiency.

The project is the result of an ongoing dialogue between RFI (FS Group) the Municipality of Ponte nelle Alpi, the Province of Belluno and Società Infrastrutture Milano Cortina 2020 – 2026 S.p.A.
