Advancing Higher Education with Envision: Inside the Academic Grant Program

Learn how the inaugural cohort of the Envision Academic Grant enabled five institutions to meaningfully integrate sustainable infrastructure concepts into higher education through application of the Envision framework. This webinar will highlight key outcomes from the 2025 grant recipients, showcasing how faculty incorporated Envision into curricula and research, enhanced student learning, and strengthened connections between academic programs and real-world infrastructure challenges. 

Participants will gain insight into the structure and goals of the Envision Academic Grant, explore practical examples of implementation, and understand how their own institutions can benefit. The session will also introduce the upcoming 2026 application cycle, offering guidance on eligibility, expectations, and strategies for submitting a strong proposal.

Rajeev Ruparathna, Ph.D. PEng - Dr. Rajeev Ruparathna is an Associate Professor in Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Windsor, specializing in sustainable infrastructure and the built environment. His research integrates Building Information Modeling (BIM), life-cycle assessment, sustainable procurement, and infrastructure management to reduce environmental impacts, enhance resilience, and support evidence-based decision making across the construction and infrastructure sectors.

Dr. Ruparathna serves as an Associate Editor for the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering and Construction Innovation (Emerald). He has authored more than 75 peer-reviewed publications and supervised over 45 highly qualified personnel (HQPs), many of whom now play key roles in advancing Canada’s infrastructure sector and research community.

Sadegh Asgari, Ph.D. - Dr. Sadegh Asgari is currently an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering and the founding director of the Construction Management program at Merrimack College. Additionally, he serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering & Engineering Mechanics at Columbia University. He earned his doctoral degree in Civil Engineering with a minor in Operations Research from Columbia University. 

His research primarily focuses on developing innovative technologies and decision-making tools to advance the analysis and design of complex, dynamic systems. In particular, his interdisciplinary work integrates elegant mathematical models, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and advanced simulation techniques to support decision-making in the design, construction, and operation of sustainable and resilient infrastructure systems.

Dr. Asgari has received several awards and fellowships for his outstanding teaching and scholarly achievements, including the 2018 Merrimack Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Faculty Fellowship, the 2018, 2019, and 2021 Zampell Family Faculty Fellowships, and the 2019 Edward G. Roddy Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award (the youngest recipient in the award’s history). Additionally, he is an active member of various professional organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He is committed to advancing engineering education and research and has been involved in curriculum development, mentoring students, and serving on academic committees, including the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI).

Fethiye Ozis, PhD, PE, ENV SP - Dr. Fethiye Ozis is an Associate Teaching Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. She holds a B.S. in environmental engineering from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California. She is a licensed Professional Engineer (Environmental) in Arizona and an ISI ENVISION Sustainability Professional. Dr. Ozis has been an ASCE ExCEEd (Excellence in Civil Engineering Education) Fellow since 2016 and currently serves as a mentor. She also mentors for Engineering for One Planet (EOP) through the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Mini Grant Program. In 2024, Dr. Ozis was named a KEEN Fellow through the Kern Family Foundation. She also serves as an Engineering Unleashed Community Catalyst. Her contributions to teaching, research, and service have been recognized with multiple awards from Northern Arizona University and ASEE.

Jeong Eun Ahn, Ph.D. - Jeong Eun Ahn is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at The Cooper Union. She received her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from New York University. Dr. Ahn’s research focuses on developing predictive models of fluid movement and its environmental impacts, with the overarching goal of building sustainable and resilient coastal systems that protect urban environments and preserve water quality. Her work integrates numerical modeling, data-driven analysis, and interdisciplinary collaboration to address challenges in coastal resilience and infrastructure design. She is deeply committed to engaging undergraduate students in research and advancing innovation in engineering education. Dr. Ahn also contributes to professional and community initiatives promoting sustainability and STEM learning.

Shannon L. Isovitsch Parks, Ph.D., P.E., M. ASCE, ENV SP - Shannon L. Isovitsch Parks is an Associate Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (UPJ), focused on teaching water resources and environmental engineering. Prior to joining UPJ in 2016, Dr. Parks worked for approximately 15 years in industry, including developing sustainable wastewater treatment and solid waste reuse technologies, serving on the Alcoa Foundation Board of Directors, and consulting for government agencies, municipalities, and industrial clients. In addition to her industry and academic experience, Dr. Parks served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mali, West Africa, supporting a local Non-Governmental Organization on water sanitation projects. Dr. Parks is a registered Professional Engineer and holds a BS degree in Civil Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University and a MS and PhD degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
