The redevelopment of Teramo Station has been recognized with an Envision Gold Award. This project is part of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana’s (RFI) strategy to reaffirm the central role of railway stations within communities.
Through its integrated station plan, RFI aimed to transform Teramo Station into a hub for integrated and sustainable mobility, offering innovative solutions for travelers and ensuring a positive travel experience. From the outset, the Envision V3 protocol was applied to define priority objectives and evaluate the project’s impact in terms of social, economic, and environmental indicators.
The design choices focus on integrating the station with its urban and regional context. This includes redeveloping station environments and creating spaces for community interaction. The project also enhances intermodal services by increasing parking facilities—categorized by type and strategically located—facilitating efficient access to and from the station. These initiatives promote sustainable and efficient mobility, benefiting both the environment and the local economy. These efforts contributed to the project’s strong performance in the Envision Quality of Life category.
Extensive stakeholder engagement played a crucial role in the project. Meetings with institutions such as the municipal administration and the superintendency, as well as with neighborhood groups and local associations, helped align the project goals with community needs. This collaborative approach was key to the high score the project achieved in the Envision Leadership category.
The project also excelled in the Natural World category by focusing on urban renewal. The design envisions the railway station as a catalyst for public space, featuring a new square and a green urban park to create inclusive and inviting environments for residents and visitors.
The project team also paid close attention to resilience, from a system and accessibility standpoint. A climate risk and vulnerability assessment was carried out to identify and implement adaptation measures aimed at reducing the residual risk to an acceptable level.
The redevelopment of Teramo Station and the surrounding area involves an investment of €23 million, funded through Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), RFI’s Program Contract, and a municipal contribution. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025.
